‘The Simpsons’ And ‘Futurama’ Crossover Details

With every adult cartoon that hits the television screens, there is always the inevitable comparison to the one animated sitcom that started it all: The Simpsons. Let’s admit it, back when The Simpsons came out, the idea of an animated series on television aimed not directly at kids was not exactly in vogue. Since that time, we’ve had big hits in Family Guy, South Park, and a large number of shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup. But on the heels of a Simpsons/Family Guy crossover, we have another crossover, wherein The Simpsons get to interact with the cast Futurama, which is another show of Matt Groening’s creation.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Matt Groening discussed the great difficulties involved with getting something like a Simpsons/Futurama crossover accomplished. “That was a really tough one to negotiate, because I had to talk to myself,” Groening told them. All joking aside, however, with the Futurama series behind us (for the time being, at least), it seemed fitting to the creators for fans to get another chance to see Fry and co., says Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean.

They were going off the air, so I thought people would really love it if we had one more chance to see those characters. We’re always looking for things that are compatible with us, and I thought, “Well, what’s more compatible?” We do a joke, actually, about how similar Bender and Homer look. Like, they just erased Homer’s hair.

So how exactly do the Simpsons cross over into the Futurama world? Unlike with Family Guy, they can’t exactly walk into a random city and have random adventures, right? Well, the actual scenario is a bit complicated, according to Entertainment Weekly.

[It’s] a complex, Terminator-esque story that involves Bart blowing his nose on a sandwich that he places in a time capsule. When that mixes with Milhouse’s rabbit’s foot and some radioactive ooze, it creates a global catastrophe in the future, prompting Bender to travel back in time to kill Bart and prevent this mega-mess.

Sadly, folks will have to wait until November 9th to see how this entire fiasco ends. But if you’re impatient, you still have the upcoming Simpsons/Family Guy crossover to look forward to in late September.

Until then, there are plenty of old episodes from both shows for you to comb through and enjoy for the umpteenth time, and November will be here before you know it.
